{Mrs. Carlson} Hello, my name is Terry Carlson. I am very excited to embark on my first year as a Homelink Learning Plan Consultant. In November 2009, I applied and received a job teaching in the Alternative High School as a highly qualified Social Studies teacher. I loved it!!! The diverse ways the students would think and problem solve really motivated me to think outside of the box and create lesson plans that met their individual needs. I believe parents, as teachers, have this same wonderful opportunity and so much more. I am so eager to read about all the creative ways that are being used to help children learn.
My life story is very simple. It really begins with the man I married. I was very fortunate to have married the man that I had a crush on all through high school. We have been married 32 years. We began our life in Bothell, WA. where my husband got a teaching position. Soon, we had four boys and decided the city was no place to raise four rambunctious children. We began the search for a teaching position in a small community where the boys would have the freedom to experience the outdoors. We finally settled in Northport, WA. During this time I started college to become a teacher. I finally graduated from Eastern Washington University with a History and Physical Education degree. Later, I went back to school to earn my elementary degree. When our youngest was five I started teaching full time. All our boys went to the same school where Gerhard and I were teaching, and we had the wonderful opportunity to teach our sons. I have taught in the Northport Schools for 22 years. Most of my career was teaching in the elementary grades 2-4. I thought my love was the second grade, but after teaching in the Alternative High School I have determined I love all kids!

Later, I earned my masters degree in Elementary Science and earned my National Boards. During 2009-2010 I began earning my principal degree. This year I will be working on my principal internship. As you can see learning has been a large part of my life and I hope never to stop getting educated. If I can just get one person to love learning and become a life-long learner I would be at the top of the world. You as parents have this tremendous opportunity to develop life-long learners in your children. Go for it, help your children absorb, internalize and learn everything they can. More recently, Gerhard, our sons, and I began a non-profit outdoor school, Silvercrown Mountain Outdoor School (SMOS). Our focus is getting children active in the outdoors and physically fit. I feel this is such a privilege to become a learning plan consultant. I am going to enjoy getting to know and understand my families and I hope we will work well together to build life-long learners. Thank you, Terry Carlson |
