The National School Breakfast & Lunch Program promotes the health and well-being of children by providing meals in our public schools. In order that every student has access to these meals, income eligibility guidelines have been created to provide free or reduced price meals to those children most in need. These guidelines are based on the federal income poverty guidelines and are revised annually.
We would like to remind you that you may apply for meal benefits any time during the school year. If you should have a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, or become unemployed, or receive Basic Food, TANF, or FDPIR, you may be eligible for benefits and may fill out an application at that time. You may pick up a form at the Northport High School Office or in the Cafeteria. If you have additional questions regarding the free or reduced program, please call the Food Service Dept. at 509-732-4251 EX 129.
Northport School District is committed to providing nourishing meals to all students and staff. We offer the National School Breakfast and Lunch program to ensure students are offered well-balanced meals at an affordable price. Students may purchase meals individually. However, each student has their own meal card with an assigned number and we encourage them to purchase their meals using a weekly or monthly pre-payment option. Payments are not taken in the serving line. Payments must be received in the High School Office before lunch. Please send the proper amount of money with your child. Meals may also be paid for with a credit card in our online payment program, through RevTrak. Instructions for RevTrak are located in Skyward Family Access under Food Service. Meal charging is not allowed at the middle school & high school level. At the elementary school level, the charge limit is equal to the current dollar amount of two paid lunches.We have received the USDA Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Grant. Your children (grades K-8) will be receiving a fresh fruit/vegtable snack from the grant this year.As part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act new nutrition standards were implemented to improve your child's school breakfast and lunch.
The new nutrition standards bring an emphasis to:
· An increase in the number of servings and variety of fruits and vegetables
· Specific vegetable subgroups including dark green, red/orange, and legumes
· An increase in the offering of whole grain foods
· Calorie ranges based on the ages of the children
· A focus on reducing saturated fat, trans fat and sodium
· A wider variety of vegetables are now being offered so encourage your child to try new veggie choices like dark green, red and orange veggies and beans/peas.What you need to know.
Northport School District believes in the importance of offering menus with a variety of choices to students. "Offer versus Serve" is a system designed to give students greater flexibility in choice and reduce food waste. Students are encouraged to take all foods on the menu and must take a fruit or vegetable, but may decline up to any two other items at lunch (or one item at breakfast) from the menu. All selected items will be served in full portions.
Please feel free to come & eat breakfast or lunch with your student at any time. At least one day advanced noticed is appreciated.Office Hours:Our Nutrition Services Office is open from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM on school days. We are located in the Cafeteria in front of the gym.
